Getting started
You don't need an account. Without one, all your workouts, routines, measurements and records stay on your iPhone and are never sent to our servers. Logging and history are free forever, with or without an account. What stays on your device.
Logging a workout gives you:
- Ghost values showing last session's numbers, so confirming a set is one tap
- RPE, and warm-up, failure and drop set types
- A rest timer with lock-screen alerts, a plate calculator, and supersets
- 1,300+ exercises with demonstration GIFs, plus any custom exercises you add
- Automatic PR detection: heaviest weight, best estimated 1RM, and rep records
- Full workout history with search and a calendar view
Bringing your history from another app
Steel Log imports your complete history from Hevy or Strong as a CSV — every workout, no caps, free. Export your history from the app you're leaving, then import that file into Steel Log.
If an import doesn't come through cleanly, send us the file and we'll look at it: get in touch.
Getting your data out
You can export everything as CSV or JSON at any time, free. There is no paywall on your own data.
If you're signed in, the workouts, routines, folders, labels and custom exercises you log sync privately to your account, so they're backed up and available if you reinstall or switch devices. That data is visible only to you unless you explicitly share a workout. Your weight log and any other measurements sync the same way and are never shared to the community. What we collect.
Progress photos never leave your device. They are stored only on your iPhone and are never uploaded, including when you have an account.
Apple Health and Apple Watch
Connecting Apple Health is optional, and you can disconnect it at any time in Settings. While it's connected, Steel Log reads the heart rate and active calories recorded during your workout — typically by an Apple Watch — and attaches the average and maximum heart rate and the calories to that workout in your history.
The full heart-rate series is read only on demand, to draw the chart on a workout's detail screen, and is never stored. Your VO2 max estimate and cardio recovery are read the same way: shown to you inside the app, never stored on our servers and never uploaded anywhere. With your permission, finished workouts are also written back to Apple Health so they count toward your Activity rings. The full disclosure.
Sharing, and who can see what
New workouts share with your followers by default. You can change who sees a workout, or turn sharing off entirely, right on the save screen — it's a choice you make workout by workout. A workout left Off stays on your iPhone and is never posted.
When you do share one, what appears is that workout's summary: title, date, duration, volume, sets, exercises, and any note you attach. It's shown according to the visibility you pick — everyone, or your followers. You can also make your account private, so follow requests need your approval. What other users can see.
Three other surfaces are optional and worth knowing about:
- Challenges. Joining a group challenge makes your display name and your progress number for that challenge visible to the other members while it runs. A public challenge reaches further: its leaderboard shows your rank, display name, @username, profile picture and total to every signed-in Steel Log user, including people who have not joined it. Making your account private does not hide you there. Your total keeps updating from the workouts you log for as long as the challenge runs, and it counts every workout, so workouts you keep private still count toward it — but only the total is shown, never your exercise names, your individual workouts, or their dates. Nobody can add you to a challenge, and a challenge's visibility is fixed when it is created.
- Published routines. Your routines are private until you publish them. Publishing one makes that routine, and the profile it's published under, publicly visible to others browsing the catalog. You can unpublish at any time.
- Invite links. An invite link opens a public web page showing your @username. We don't index those pages, but anyone the link is forwarded to can open it.
Reporting, blocking and muting
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behavior, including harassment, hate speech, threats, sexually explicit material, spam and impersonation.
You can report any post, comment or user from within the app, and block or mute any user. Blocking immediately hides that user's content from you. We review reports, remove violating content, and suspend or permanently ban the accounts responsible. Community content and conduct.
You own the content you post, and you can delete your posts and comments at any time.
Steel Pro and billing
Logging and history are free forever. Steel Pro is an optional upgrade bought inside the app: $3.99 monthly, $29.99 yearly, or $79.99 as a one-time Lifetime purchase. It adds automatic progression rules, advanced statistics with a muscle heatmap, RPE insights and weekly reports, cardio analytics, body measurements beyond weight, and gym equipment profiles.
Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. Monthly and Yearly renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; your account is charged within 24 hours before the period ends, at the price you agreed to. Lifetime is a one-time, non-renewing purchase. Subscription terms.
To cancel, use your Apple ID account settings. Canceling inside Steel Log's own settings does not cancel Apple billing, and deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription — cancel that separately. Refunds are handled by Apple under their refund policies, not by us directly.
Your account
An account stores your email address; your name, if you sign in with Apple and choose to share it; the display name, username and bio you set; and a profile picture if you add one.
To delete your account, go to Settings → Account → Delete account in the app. That permanently removes your profile, shared workouts, comments, likes, follows and other community activity from our servers. We keep your data while your account is active; once you delete it, it's removed from our systems except where law requires us to retain certain records, such as transaction records for tax purposes. Your choices.
Steel Log is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Who else touches your data
Four providers, each receiving only what it needs to do its job: Supabase hosts the backend database and authentication, RevenueCat manages subscription purchases and entitlements, Apple processes App Store payments and Sign in with Apple, and Resend delivers transactional email such as sign-in links and account notices.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your fitness data for advertising. Who we share it with.
Still stuck?
Email us — a person reads it. Tell us what you were doing and what happened, and if it's about a purchase, the Apple ID you bought with helps.
